Keller High Swimmer Wins Pair of State Championships

Keller High School swimmer Laura Norman collected two state championships as Keller ISD was well represented on the medal stands at the 2014 UIL Class 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Norman came away with wins in the Girls 200-Yard Individual Medley and the Girls 100 Backstroke at the championship meet held February 21-22 at the University of Texas' Lee & Joe Jamail Swimming Center.

The KHS senior shaved nearly three seconds off of her preliminary time to touch the wall at 2:01.73 in the finals, nearly two seconds in front of Southlake Carroll's Emily Gibson. Central High swimmer Madison Straight finished third at 2:04.30.

Norman had a closer race in the 100 Back, finishing with a time of 54.44, just 15 one-hundredths of a second in front of Austin Westlake's Victoria Edwards. Georgia Brown of CHS was in the mix in that race, coming in 5th with a time of 57.03.

While Norman was the only KISD swimmer to return home with the gold, the District made several other trips to the medal stand.

Keller High and Central finished in second and third, respectively, in the Girls 200 Medley Relay. The KHS team of Norman, Kendall Hazleton, Ashley Ward, and Audrey McMurry finished with a time 1:45.55, just three tenths of a second behind the team from Austin Westlake. The Chargers' squad of Brown, Straight, Lauren Williams, and Kayla Epting were right behind with a time of 1:46.09.

The KHS Girls 200 Freestyle Relay team also took silver as Norman, Sophia Frohberg, McMurry, and Megan Hanson finished in 1:36.17, three hundredths of a second behind champion Humble Atascocita. Central's team of Williams, Brown, Carly Straight, and Epting came in fifth.

Keller's Luke Mankus also earned silver, coming in second in the Boys 50 Free with a time of 20.84, just behind Klein's Robert Slaughter. Mankus also collected a fourth-place finish in the Boys 100 Butterfly (50.04).

Fossil Ridge freshman swimmer Lauren Pitzer made the podium twice in her first UIL State Championship Meet. Pitzer came in third in both the Girls 50 Free (23.28) and the Girls 500 Free (4:51.98).

Additionally, impressive performances were put together by Central's Jason Head who finished fourth in the Boys 100 Free (45.86) and Keller freshman Taylor Ohlhauser who came in fourth in Girls Diving with a score of 449.30.

Central's Girls 400 Free Relay also finished fourth, as the team of Epting, Williams, Carly Straight, and Madison Straight posted a time of 3:30.89.
