National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week, January 25-31 2016 (NDAFW) is a national health observance for teens to promote local events that use NIDA science to SHATTER THE MYTHS about drugs.

Did you know that North Texas middle school, high school, and college students report underage drinking as the most common illegal substance of use? In fact, North Texas secondary students in Region 3, a 19-county area surrounding the DFW Metroplex, report their first unsupervised drink of alcohol at 12.6 years of age!  That’s slightly below the state average (12.9 years of age).  If this fact surprises you, then you’ll want to pay attention during National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week

An annual, week-long observance that brings together teens and scientific experts to shatter persistent myths about substance use and addiction will feature information about alcohol in addition to drug use. Now called National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) the observance will be held Jan 25-31, 2016 and is sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), both part of the National Institutes of Health.

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week links students with scientists and other experts to counteract the myths about drugs and alcohol that teens get from the internet, TV, movies, music, or from friends. The National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug abuse and addiction. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism became a partner starting in 2016, and alcohol has been added as a topic area for the week. For all information related to NDAFW, go to: http://teens.drugabuse.gov/national-drug-facts-week

Ideas for events, as well as success stories from previous years, are listed on the National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week Web portal that resides within the popular NIDA for Teens.

“We are not powerless when it comes to drugs and alcohol use among young people. We know that preventing substance use before it begins is the most cost-effective approach to reduce substance use and its consequences. By raising awareness and educating young people and their families, we can help reduce drug use and the number of people affected by substance use disorder.” ONDCP Director Michael Botticelli.

For questions about events, or to receive an e-newsletter following NDAFW planning, organizations can email NIDA at drugfacts@nida.nih.gov.
