Tax-Free Weekend Kicks Off Friday

Whether you’re mourning the end of summer or eagerly anticipating the upcoming school year, there’s one reason for everyone to celebrate: tax-free weekend.  Texas’ annual tax holiday will begin on Friday, Aug. 17 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 19.

Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced at less than $100 will be exempt from sales tax this weekend.  The law could save shoppers approximately $8 for every $100 they spend on tax-free items.

The tax exemption is applied to each individual item.  If a customer purchases two pairs of shorts for $60 each, then the exemption applies to both pairs.

Shopping centers and malls across Texas are hosting special events and sales for the tax holiday, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get to the stores and brush up on some other useful tax-free weekend tips.

With most schools starting in two weeks, it’s not a bad idea to save yourself some money and take advantage of the sales going on this weekend.
