Keller Parks and Recreation Department received first place in the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine Lifestyle Improvement Challenge at an awards ceremony on Wednesday. Keller was one of ten cities in the area that was asked to participate in the eight month-long event.

The goal of the Lifestyle Improvement Challenge was to challenge communities within the surrounding area to improve their overall health. Keller received top honors for their commitment to providing quality of life improvements for the citizens through the development of parks and recreational activities. Examples of activities include the Rock the Park event, run series, Wii Be Fit events and the weight-loss challenge.

In addition to the first place honor, Keller also received a $25,000 award to be used to support fitness and wellbeing initiatives within the parks and the community. The funding will aid in the facilitation of future programs that promote community-based wellness and prevention.

"One of the City's top priorities has always been to promote healthy and active lifestyles for our citizens and surrounding communities. We are pleased to have the honor of making a difference in our community," said Julie Adkins, recreation superintendent.

The mission of the Parks and Recreation department is to promote fitness and wellbeing for the entire community. The City of Keller strives to offer a diverse parks and recreation system which allows for individuals of all ages a variety of choices to stay active in the community where they live.

The City of Keller has more than 17 miles of hike and bike trails, an award-winning Keller Pointe recreation and aquatic center, a vibrant Senior Activities Center, and more than 450 acres of developed and undeveloped park and open space. These amenities are just a few of what make Keller a great place to live, work and play.
