Come visit Holder Dane Gallery to see this wonderful sculpture by Mark Hyde, titled “Winter Leaves.” It is created from a type of marble called Sivec, from Macedonia, which is the same marble used by Hellenistic cultures in ancient times. “Winter Leaves” is part of a series of pieces where Mark uses improvisation in stone and a variety of tools including diamond grinders, chisels, rasps and sandpaper to arrive at the final smooth finish. He does not use sketches or maquettes but just begins carving and allows the stone to “reveal” itself to him while uncovering its form.
