Keller Police Officer Johnathan Hicks shot and killed a suspected shoplifter, who has been identified as Mark Anthony Brooks, 42, of Fort Worth, on Thursday, Oct. 25 at a Kohl’s department store, located at 2001 S. Main Street in Keller.

A loss prevention officer employed by Kohl’s detained Brooks for suspected shoplifting and requested police assistance just before 4 p.m. last Thursday.

Keller Police Chief Mark Hafner said Brooks became combative when Officer Hicks attempted to take the shoplifting suspect into custody.

Hicks attempted to fight off the attack and told Brooks to stop, but the suspect continued trying to overtake the officer and grab his gun. Brooks even threatened to kill the officer, Hafner said.

It is believed Officer Hicks fired his weapon at Brooks four times, fatally wounding the suspect.

Brooks was transported by CareFlight to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he later died in surgery.

Officer Hicks was treated and released from a local hospital for injuries sustained during the attack. Hicks is a 10-year veteran of the Keller Police Department and has served in Iraq.

“I served in Iraq with Officer Hicks,” Raymond Leger, a BubbleLife reader, said in the comment section of this article. “My thoughts and prayers go out to him, as I know that firing his weapon was the last thing he wanted to do.”

The shooting is still currently under investigation.
