During the month of October, Samuel Beck Elementary School students created pins to raise money in support of local shelter animals.

In past years, art teacher Shannon Stephens has organized fundraisers for Houses for Haiti and relief effort in Japan. This year, she has asked her students to help a local cause with “Pins for Pets.”

“I like to do social outreach projects so that kids understand they can make an impact in their community,” said Stephens. “I teach over 700 kids, so when we all work together, we can make quite a difference.”

Stephens asked her students to make the pins, which can be purchased for a donation of $2 in the school’s art room from 7:20 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. So far, Stephens estimates her students have raised about $1,700 for the cause. The pins will be available until all are sold and the students reach their goal of $3,000.

All of the funds raised will be donated to the Animal Advocates of North Texas (AANT) to assist with the cost of care and comfort for shelter animals while they attempt to find new homes. AANT said the funds will also be used to cover the medical expenses of some animals in need of care.

Pet portraits of Keller shelter and foster animals are expected to be displayed at Keller Town Hall for the entire month of December to continue raising awareness.
